The Sustainable Packaging Coaltion (SPC) is key to get everyone's voice at the table to address problems throughout the chain, according to its director.

The SPC said one of its strength is its breadth of members along the supply chain, leading to working groups being set up to deal with industry-specific issues.

Nina Goodrich, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition director, told FoodProductionDaily.com the organisation highlighted what they had done and how to go further at their fall meeting.

"One of the things that became really clear is that companies are beginning to use the tools and embed the tools in everyday thinking.

"So what came out of the SPC which was a life cycle approach starting with design and working through end of life has really become a way to think about product development.

"So this idea that sustainable thinking is now being embedded in our new packaging development process but also in our new product development process."

She added that while a number of the bigger issues have not been tackled there are a number of sub-issues that need to be looked at in individual industries.

Goodrich was previously program director for PAC NEXT in Toronto, an initiative of The Packaging Association and founded consultancy Sustainnovation Solutions.
