Lay’s angles up to score with Lionel Messi

The PepsiCo megabrand continues to celebrate soccer by tapping the ‘Chip Shot’ legend for a new spot, a sweepstakes and collectible-worthy Lay’s bags.

With soccer season in full swing, Lay’s is encouraging snackers to chant ‘Olé’ after every goal – with a bag of the iconic potato chips in hand, of course.

It’s also giving fans extra reason to cheer this season with the continued help from soccer G.O.A.T Lionel Messi. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is known for mastering the mesmerizing move that involves chipping the ball over the goalkeeper’s head into the net.

To commemorate his first chip shot goal of the 2024 soccer season, the two global icons invite fans to embrace a new rally cry – ‘Oh-Lay’s, Oh-Lay’s, Oh-Lay’s, Oh-Lay’s’ – with the chance to win limited edition swag that would make a unique addition to any soccer memorabilia collection.

“When it comes to the perfect blend of skill and flavor, few can match the iconic taste of Lay’s chips or the mastery of Messi on the field, so we knew we had to bring the chip icons together to recognize their greatness,” said Tina Mahal, senior VP of Marketing, PepsiCo Foods North America.

The new ‘Oh-Lay’’s’ TV spot – which sees Messi demonstrating how Lay’s and soccer are undeniably synonymous – will air through the World Cup-style tournament, inviting die-hard fans and first-time viewers to join in the fun.

“One of the best parts of the sport is that it brings families and friends together to cheer on their favorite team, which is exactly what Lay’s strives to do,” said Messi.

“This campaign combines football and Lay’s in an iconic way that will have fans chanting for years to come.”

Lay’s has also launched a sweepstakes offering fans the chance to win limited-edition soccer ball-shaped potato chip bags, while one lucky person will nab a Messi-autographed Lay’s jersey like the one featured in the spot.
