The Mexican bakery giant – owner of India’s Harvest Gold, Modern Bread and Kitty brands – donated 35,000 loaves of bread (equivalent to five lakh slices) to the India Food Banking Network (IFBN), as part of the India chapter of its Bimbo Global Race initiative.

Eradicating world hunger is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It also forms the foundation of the sustainability strategy adopted globally by the world’s largest bakery manufacturer, with its tagline touting ‘Grupo Bimbo exists to nourish a better world’.

Key to its corporate social responsibility (CSR) plan is the promotion of a healthier lifestyle, along with easier access to this for everyone though its range of better-for-you products. Similarly, the Mexico City-headquartered behemoth hosts a number of endeavours like the Bimbo Global Race to eliminate world hunger.

The competition is the world's largest race for a cause. In 2022, the seventh annual race attracted 340,000 participants in 99 countries.

Participants run the race together – either in-person or virtually – on the same day, with a goal going beyond a medal. For each runner registered, Bimbo donates 20 slices of bread to the foodbanks around the globe.

Since launching in 2016, the race has accumulated more than 16 million slices of bread to feed the hungry.

“The Global Energy Race 2021 broke record figures for participation with 500,000 global runners, thereby achieving the greatest donation of bread in history,” said Alberto Levy, global market VP Global Marketing VP for Grupo Bimbo at the kick-off of the 2022 event held in September.

“This year we have another opportunity to help those most in need. We invite everyone, whether as a runner or walker, to join this great race for a cause and help us make history again. You run; we donate.”

The bakery major had organised two legs of the 2022 race in India. The Delhi NCR (Gurugram) leg was hosted by the Harvest Gold brand, while the Kochi leg was run as the Modern Global Race, both attracting more than 20,000 registrations.

Raj Kanwar Singh, Managing Director, Bimbo Bakeries India said, “The Bimbo Global Race is a purpose-driven initiative in which participants are not only running for their own health but also contributing towards feeding the underprivileged people.”

Grupo Bimbo is a multinational company with a presence in over 33 countries located in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. It is also largest bread maker in India with three prominent brands – Harvest Gold, Modern and Kitty.
