Target and Walmart also made the list at #13 and #32, respectively. Companies in the hospitality, financial, tech, and health industries dominated the list, however, claiming nearly all of the remaining 45 spots.
This is the second year the same three food companies have appeared on DiversityInc’s Top 50 companies list with Hershey moving up a few spots from #25 in 2019 to #21 in 2020.
According to DiversityInc, Hershey made the list for its hiring practices and percentage of women holding leadership positions in the company, noting:
“Hershey’s diverse approach to hiring makes a difference. In 2019, the company was a global leader on gender representation, with women occupying many of the top positions in the company — including CEO and chairman of the board, and chief growth officer — and throughout the company at 50%. Across Hershey’s total US salaried workforce, US women earn 0.99 cents on the dollar compared to men. Additionally, 42% of its board of directors are women."
Kellogg fell a few spots in its ranking from #18 in 2019, to #21 in 2020.
It was the fourth year in a row that McCormick & Company secured a place on the Top 50, ranking at #44 in this year’s list and being recognized by DiversityInc as one of the 'Top Companies for Philanthropy' this year. In 2019, the company was included in the 'Top Companies for Executive Women' list.
Judging criteria
Submission to DiversityInc’s annual diversity survey is free and includes answering over 200 questions around gender and racial/ethnic representation of the overall workforce and management, as well as representation in new hires, promotions, turnover, and the 10% highest-paid employees.
Companies are also judged on employee access to talent development programs and workplace practices related to talent acquisition and management, workforce development and engagement, diversity training.
DiversityInc also asks companies about their supplier diversity and procurement spend with companies owned by people from under-represented groups as well and philanthropic conclusions.
