Chaucer Foods UK and Filippo Berio JV to launch Mediterranean crostini

Specialist bread products manufacturer Chaucer Foods UK has formed a partnership with olive oil brand Filippo Berio to develop the range of Filippo Berio Crostini.

Grant Walsh, sales director of Chaucer Foods UK told BakeryandSnacks the crostini incorporate Filippo Berio’s extra virgin olive oil and will extend Chaucer Foods’ existing portfolio of bread-based products, croutons and freeze-dried fruit and vegetable snacks.

“Partnering with Filippo Berio allows us to tap into a new pool of fans by introducing a range of snacks with a well-known and trusted brand,” said Walsh.

Oil’s well

“The snacks are being produced at Chaucer’s factory in Hull and are baked rather than fried, which means they contain 30% less fat than fried crisps,” said Walsh, noting they are also free from artificial additives.

Initially, five Mediterranean flavors inspired from Filippo Berio’s Italian heritage will be rolled out to several major retailers across the UK in May, and Walsh hinted more flavors are to come. The five variants include Fennel & Garlic, Formaggio (cheese), Lightly Sea Salted, Rosemary & Sea Salt, and Sundried Tomato.

The 100g and 24g packs feature the Filippo Berio logo, now a household name in the UK.

According to Nielsen, the company has been the UK’s number one olive oil brand for over 30 years. It also has a growing footprint in the US, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Russia, China and Brazil.

Happy birthday

“We have long had an ambition to bring a snacking product to the market. It is significant that, in the year Filippo Berio celebrates its 150th anniversary, we are doing so – true to our founder’s pioneering entrepreneurial spirit,” added Walter Zanre, MD, Filippo Berio UK.

The partnership was brokered by leading global brand extension agency Beanstalk.

The 100g quad packs of baked crostini will have a RSP of £1.99 ($2.48), available in cases of 12 units.
