The PepsiCo brand recently partnered with Cara Operations, owner of the Swiss Chalet chain of dining-in and take-away restaurants, to develop limited-edition potato chips featuring the restaurant’s Signature Chalet Dipping Sauce.
The chips were made available in 255 g bags and 40 g bags only at participating Swiss Chalet restaurants, but the manufacturer is now gearing up for a retail launch on November 1 across Canada.
Lays said it is also increasing production of the chips to be sold in restaurants after selling out at many venues.
"Canadians have flocked to restaurants and this overwhelmingly positive response has resulted in many locations selling out within days of launch," said Lindsay Robinson, marketing director at Cara Operations.
Staple with Canadian families
When it first launched the chips, Lay’s described Swiss Chalet's sauce a staple with Canadian families since 1954 and said it was this love of the sauce that inspired the businesses to create the chip.
"We knew Canadians would have a sweet spot for Lay's Chalet Sauce chips, but the response has been beyond our expectations," said Frito Lay senior marketing director Shereen Yasseen this week.
"We're ramping up production as quickly as possible to get more bags into Swiss Chalet restaurants nationally.”
Available across Canada
Lay's Chalet Sauce potato chips will be available at mass retailers and grocery stores across Canada in 255 g, 66 g and 40 g bags from November 1. PepsiCo has said quantities will be limited.
In addition to Swiss Chalet, the Cara business franchises or operates restaurant brands including Harvey's, Kelsey's, East Side Mario's, Montana's, Milestones, Prime Pubs, Bier Markt, New York Fries and Landing restaurants. It has 1,003 restaurants, 958 located in Canada and the remaining 45 located internationally.
