KM Packaging targets food waste stats with resealable lid for snacks

KM Packaging, which makes lidding for ready meals and pre-made flexible packaging for confectionery and bakery products, has launched a resealing film called K Reseal that can be opened and reclosed multiple times.

The film is compatible with Apet, Cpet and PE lined types of thermoformed trays and can be used for convenience and chilled products. K Reseal's features include anti-fog, laser perforation and printability, and the transparent lid is also printable.

Snacks, treats & salads

As the lidding film can be resealed multiple times it can be used to package snacks, treats, salads and other foods that need to be kept fresh despite repeat opening and closing.

KM Packaging commercial director Graham Holding told BakeryandSnacks that, despite efforts by the food industry to reduce waste, more than £10bn ($13.2bn) worth of food is thrown away in the UK every year.

A significant proportion of this is down to issues with shelf life and labeling, so any efforts to extend shelf life and reduce waste should be applauded,” he said. “K Reseal is consumer-friendly lidding that provides shoppers with easy-repeat access to fresh produce or snacks over numerous occasions, without compromising shelf life.

“This means food which might have previously dried out or gone off once opened has a better chance of being used instead of being thrown away.”

On-shelf appeal

Holding added that significant packaging weight reduction is achieved when compared to traditional thermoformed clip-on lids, and up to 3,000g of packed product can be stacked for distribution and retail.

K Reseal can also be customized to a manufacturer’s requirements in terms of size, aperture and shape, and is compatible with all types of tray sealing machines.

Laser or macro hole perforation can also extend the shelf life of fresh produce, allowing the product to 'breathe’ as the trays are stacked for transport and display.
