A trade show for the plastics recycling industry has been cancelled following the terrorist attacks in Brussels.

The attacks in Belgium at Zanentem airport and a metro station killed more than 30 people and injured hundreds more.

Plastics Recycling Show (PRS) Europe is organised by Plastic News Europe in association with Plastic Recyclers Europe (PRE) and was planned for 22-23 March.

Event cancellation

Exhibitors were due to include AIMPLAS, Bühler Sortex, EREMA, KraussMaffei Berstorff, Sesotec, Tomra Sorting and Veolia Polymers NL at Brussels Expo.

The two day event had already been rescheduled from November last year when security concerns prompted its cancellation.

“Due to serious events that took place in Brussels this morning, the organisers of the PRSE show have had no other option but to cancel the show,” said Steve Crowhurst, managing director of Crain Communications UK, in a statement yesterday.

“The safety and security of our exhibitors, visitors, staff and suppliers remains our absolute priority. The situation in Brussels remains fluid and we will provide further updates as and when.”

Attacks condemned

Europol condemned ‘in the most categorical terms’ the heinous attacks.

Rob Wainwright, Europol director, said they are a further reminder of the volatile terrorist threat faced in Europe today.

“Working with its security partners in the EU and beyond, Europol is determined to fight terrorism in all its aspects and all its manifestations,” he said.

“To that end, our action must continue to be part of a comprehensive approach based on the strengthening of resources to thwart the actions of terrorist networks, their financing and online reach.”

Food industry trade groups, many of which are headquartered in Brussels, also reacted to the attacks.

The PRS Europe event is organised with Polymer Comply Europe, a service provider for the plastics industry specialised in EU legislation.

It is supported by EPRO, the European Association of Plastics Recycling & Recovery Organisations.

Other industry supporting bodies include European Plastics Converters, Petcore Europe, Recovinyl, PlasticsEurope, Federplast, FEBEM-FEGE and Vinyl Plus.
