Smart packaging: Is industry being clever enough?

Manufacturers want packaging that adds value to the consumer experience and has stand-out shelf appeal in a crowded market, but what opportunities are there in the drive to be ‘smarter’?

BakeryandSnacks.com has put together a special edition looking at 'smart packaging' in the global bakery, snacks and cereal sector.

As part of the edition, we spoke to packaging expert Andrew Streeter, director of CPS International, about what categories need to play catch up in 'smart' developments and why, along with some of the biggest challenges facing industry in the drive for improved packaging formats.

Canadean analyst Sam Allen also discussed the opportunities presented by data technology for shelf life communication in bread - an area yet to be developed but one he said held mass consumer appeal. Euromonitor International's analyst Dimitrios Dimakakos also weighed in about what consumers really want in a ‘smart’ package and how smaller packs appealed on several levels.
