C.L. Smith, a St. Louis-based design firm received Bronze-level recognition in the Food category in the Packages of the Year awards for the Actual Fruit Cup. The packaging was executed in collaboration with brand owner Tom Lange, an international fresh fruit and vegetable producer.
Container collaboration
Nancy Newby, president of C.L. Smith, said the creation of the winning package was made possible by input from, and communication among, multiple players.
“This collaboration required multiple companies coming together seamlessly to produce an innovative product that attracts the grab ‘n go market,” she said.
Consumer-forward design
The Actual Fruit Cup single-serve containers hold 5 ounces of fresh product. The clear cups (composed of recycled resin) are adorned with a label resembling a smiling face, and as the consumer eats the product, the reverse of the label reveals the message “EAT. SMILE. REPEAT.”
The side walls of the cups curve inward, a feature designed to promote the product’s position as a grab-and-go snack. The lid has an easy-open tab and an indent to promote stackability.
The Actual Fruit Cup line currently is being sold at select Target stores in parts of the US. In addition to the NACD recognition, the cup design also received recognition in the Best of Food and Beverages Packages of the Year program, in the Rigid Plastic category.
