Reusable packaging winners to feature at Pack Expo

Svenska Retursystem and Full Belly Farm have received Excellence in Reusable Packaging Awards from the Reusable Packaging Association (RPA).

Svenska Retursystem led a program to establish a common pooling system among more than 200 food producers in Sweden, and among European food manufacturers that export goods to the Swedish trade.

Crate and pallet sizes are standardized and returnable, replacing single use packaging. The cost savings for using reusables instead of expendable packaging for one year is $18.7m, the company said.

Full Belly Farm, a Californian organic farm, replaced 8,330 waxed cardboard boxes with 2,000 reusable plastic totes. $14,161 per year is saved by not purchasing cardboard boxes, the company claims.

The projects will feature at the RPA’s Reusables Learning Centre at Pack Expo in Chicago, US (November 2-5).
