Système U replaces cans with Tetra Pak cartons

Food distributor Système U (France) will swap cans for the Tetra Pak ‘Tetra Recart’ carton, allowing it to ship almost 400 more packages per pallet.

The rectangular design of the Tetra Recart saves up to 40% on shelf space and in distribution, meaning Système U will now be able to ship an additional 384 packages per pallet compared to the can system, according to Tetra Pak.

The distributor will launch new products in the packaging, including U-brand kidney beans and chickpeas. Existing products that will be repackaged include white beans, baked beans and prepared lentils.

Distinguishing the brand

The carton-based package for retortable food is lightweight yet sturdy, printable, and easy-to-open, claims Tetra Pak. CO2 emissions over the life of the product is 35% less than a comparable can, it adds.

Système U has more than 1,500 points of sale in France which include the Hyper U, Super U, Marche U, U express and Utile brands.

We picked Tetra Recart because it is innovative and distinguishes our brand on the shelf," said Anne-Marie Roche, head of private label marketing, Système U.
