Warburtons has secured planning permission to build a £20M factory in Burnley, Lancashire, dedicated to its sandwich alternatives lines, including Wraps and Sandwich Thins, plans for which it announced in January.

The bakery giant said Burnley Borough Council had granted planning permission for the plant. Warburtons expected to start a 35-week build programme this month and aims to have the Billington Road factory operational by January next year, creating 60 jobs.

‘Expanding our presence’

“As a family business, we are able to take decision for the long term and we’re looking forward to expanding our presence in Burnley – a town which we have been a part of for over 30 years,” said Warburtons md Neil Campbell.

The firm has existing Wraps and Sandwich Thins plants in Bristol and Bolton and produces more than £1M of these products each week. Burnley was chosen as the next location for investment due to its supply chain links and suitability for build.

The company already employs 250 people at existing Burnley facilities. It runs 26 UK sites.
