Torayfan PC5 is suitable for use in tri-lamination packages, as a foil replacement, and as an overwrap lamination or wrapper. According to the company, the material is versatile and imparts food packaging with ultra-high oxygen- and moisture-blocking capability.
Food flexibility
The film can be used as inner barrier in a tri-lamination for gas-flushed, stand-up or flat pouches. It is also suited for use as a cold-seal layer, or part of a packaging lamination for high-end confectionery wrappers and bakery overwraps; other potential applications include cookies, snacks, specialty food items, dried fruits, pet food, powdered hot chocolate and cheese, and spices.
Kerri Boyens, product manager for the company’s Torayfan division, said the material is suited for food applications looking for high-end packaging technology and materials.
“New foods are introduced to the consumer daily,” she said. “End users and converters want more than the packaging status quo.”
High-end appearance
The combination of the premium appearance and barrier properties, she added, increase the film’s potential appeal to brand owners and consumers.
“It has superior oxygen- and moisture-barrier functionality, is versatile and readily available, and is an economical solution, particularly when compared with foil,” she said.
The PC5 metallized OPP fim consists of an ultra-high-barrier layer resistant to crazing on one side. The other side is corona treated, reportedly imparting it with high bond strength in cold-seal adhesive applications, and in extrusion and adhesive three-ply laminations.
The film reportedly helps maximize shelf life. Available in 60-gauge thickness, it can be run on horizontal or vertical form, fill, and seal machines.
