The roster is an annual honor roll from research outfit Corporate Knights. It is intended to recognize companies around the world for corporate sustainability practices, eco-friendly products and other worthy achievements.
Sustainability system
Corporate Knights determines Global 100 honorees with a two-step process. First, it screens firms based on sustainability disclosure, management practices and financial health. Next, it gauges them according to sector-specific key performance indicators such as efficient use of energy and water, waste metrics and community engagement.
New Jersey-based Campbell Soup (ranked 96) is the only US food firm to merit inclusion on the list. Dave Stangis, Campbell’s vice president of public affairs and corporate responsibility, said that the honor demonstrates the company’s enterprise-wide dedication to constantly raising the bar on its sustainable practices.
“We continually challenge ourselves to become one of the most socially responsible consumer goods companies in the world, by building a more innovative, responsive and transparent company,” he said.
Reasons for ranking
Global 100 judges determined Campbell Soup deserved recognition based on capital investments in energy and water conservation, which reportedly led to a cumulative savings of nearly $54m. Other achievements including saving more than 2.4m lbs of packaging (through lightweighting and redesigns), saving reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and cutting waste sent to landfills.
Other food/beverage firms ranked to the Global 100 list include US-based Coca-Cola (43), Swiss firm Nestle SA (86), UK-based Unilever (93), BRF Brasil Foods (95) and France-based Danone SA(97).
