The company engaged its customers to their gauge satisfaction with the product and packaging. Responses indicated a clear dissatisfaction with the tear-open flexible package.
Packaging partner
Grilstad turned to RPC Superfos, who presented the salami producer with the idea of using SuperLock packs. The format replaces the tear-open packs with a formed container featuring a twist-off, screw-on lid.
Terje Sørnes, Grilstad development manager, said the SuperLock container appealed because it combined a number of benefits, wrapped up into one.
“We chose the SuperLock pot because it is the only solution on the market offering three desirable qualities all in one: an oxygen barrier, decoration with in-mold labelling and a twist-off, screw-on lid,” he said. ”When we came up with the idea of using the pot upside down, we found it so obvious that we had to ask ourselves why no one had thought of it before.”
Getting to work
The Grilstad team gave the pack a thumbs up and promptly set to bringing the salami’s revamped packaging to market. The producer and packager collaborated to design the package.
Among the ideas that emerged from brainstorming meetings: turning the pot upside down so the lid can act as a serving dish. This trick is intended to enhance ease of use and presentation; the package also can be reclosed to cut down on food waste.
One way the package improves upon tear-open packages: the recloseable container means unused product can be returned to the original package, brand intact, rather than requiring consumers to transfer the contents to another container or waste the leftovers.
Redesigned response
Grilstad staff has been pleased with the redesigned packaging, and consumers have responded similarly. Sørnes reported sales for all three salamis in the line have been healthy.
Additionally, Sørnes said, the SuperLock salami container has attracted attention from newspapers, websites and social media.
