US demand for meat packaging to top $9.5bn by 2017

Demand in the US for meat, poultry and seafood packaging will rise to an expected $9.5bn in the next five years.

Gains in the field are being propelled by improved production, a taste for single-portion and convenience products, and competitive prices. Retailer demand for more case-ready items (which typically require higher-priced trays and barrier films) are further helping the market along.

In terms of formats, flexible packaging is expected to outpace growth of rigid packaging. Pouch growth will likely be helped along by demand for single-portion fresh, frozen and processed items in vacuum pouches, with shelf-friendly stand-up pouches leading the way.

Additionally, increased demand for meat products by club and warehouse stores is expected to contribute to growth. Evolution of vacuum and modified-atmosphere packaging will help drive the increase in use of high-barrier film.

The ready-to-eat market appears to be the fastest-growing segment. Consumers are increasingly hungry for precooked bacon, cook-in-bag meats and other convenience items.
