Manufacturing capability shortfalls prompt Bimbo Bakeries plant closure

Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU) will close a Californian bakery and shift production elsewhere after careful analysis showed shortfalls in the infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities, the regional vice president said.

The Elk Grove bakery that produced tortillas, bread and buns will be closed by November 8, 2013, affecting 128 employees.

“After careful analysis and consideration, it was apparent that the facility did not have the infrastructure and manufacturing capability to compete in the marketplace,” said Joe Dangelmaier, regional vice president of operations for Bimbo Bakeries USA in California.

Dangelmaier said the closure was a difficult decision for the company. BBU respects and values employees and will assist them where possible, he added.
