Smurfit Kappa sets out sustainability to 2020

Smurfit Kappa Group (SKG) has published its vision on sustainability establishing additional objectives for the business up to 2020.

SKG has set out targets to strengthen its sustainable business practices under seven building blocks including: Chain of Custody, CO₂ emissions, Waste, Water, Health & Safety, Sustainable Sourcing, and Community Involvement.

One target includes by 2015 over 90% of paper-based packaging is labelled as Chain of Custody certified under FSC, PEFC or SFI.

Another is a 20% reduction in fossil CO2 emissions in the firm’s mill system by 2020 compared to 2005.

Gary McGann, group chief executive officer, said: “Our focus is to continue to grow our business but we will pursue growth opportunities that are commercially and economically attractive, socially progressive and environmentally sustainable.”
