Myricom, EVT partner on food processing vision systems

Myricom, an Arcadia, CA-based industrial Ethernet technology firm, is providing its FastStack MVA software with Emergent Vision Technologies’ ultra-high-speed vision inspection cameras.

According to company representatives, the pairing of the MVA (machine vision acceleration) software with the high-speed vision cameras provides food processing operations, packaging firms and other companies to put in place a system with high throughput and low CPU utilization performance needed for ultra-high-speed GigE-Vision-enabled machine vision applications. FastStack MVA is designed to deliver high bandwidth, lossless camera-frame capture for industry-standard GigE-Vision-enabled devices in machine vision systems.

John Hagerman, Myricom’s vice president of business development, said in a press statement that the technology helps satisfy the high-performance demands of food processing environments.

“Bringing our technology into this new vertical market fits Myricom’s strategy of targeting our hardware + software at applications where high performance networking makes a strategic difference for customers,” he said.

The technology

The EVT cameras are equipped with on-board processing, which reportedly enables them to handle complex imaging problems (such as product and package inspection) quickly and efficiently. The technology reportedly ensures lossless frame capture including for high-resolution color images at high frame rates.

For food processing companies and other operations, the eSDK and eCapture viewer software have adopted the FastStack MVA application programming interface. The feature reportedly enables the overall system to offer a high degree of performance and efficiency.

Other capabilities

According to company representatives, other key features and benefits of FastStack MVA and Myri-10G adapters include:

  • Low CPU overhead: Because the system relies less on the CPU than other similar products, more cycles are available for image processing
  • No dropped frames:  The high bandwidth of the 10GB Ethernet is said to let a single appliance capture and inspect all frames in a stream even at high resolution and frame rates .
  • Interoperability with Ethernet drivers: The system can handle standard Ethernet traffic while multiple GigE Vision applications receive images from multiple GigE Vision or 10GigE Vision devices.
  • Suitable interface for ultra-high-speed and high resolution applications. Representatives report that- long cable length (up to 300m with SR) and high throughput up to 10Gb/s make it a fitting solution.
