Sensient’s natural apple flavors to plug ‘positive nutrition’ desires
The flavor range – spanning ten different apple types – can be used for a wide variety of foods and beverages, including snacks, baked goods and cereals. Variants include Braeburn, Golden Delicious, Granny smith and Fuji with apple origin spanning the globe from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Canada and the US.
“Through our trend research, we have discovered that consumers are increasingly reaching for apple varieties in the produce aisle and this is providing inspiration for new flavor profiles,” Teresa Olah, marketing manager for flavor systems at Sensient Flavors LLC, said.
The firm said its new portfolio was developed to address increasing consumer desire for fruit varietals. “Driven by the health and wellness mega trend, consumers are choosing fruit varietals as a means to diversify their diet as they embrace the notion of positive nutrition.”
“While consumers are still intrigued by ‘what’s bad for us’, there is a gradual shift to focusing on ‘positive nutrition’,” it added.
True-to-type flavors
The range was developed using Sensient’s proprietary technologies. “Extensive sensory analysis and profiling was conducted to ensure that the true essence of each varietal was captured,” it said.
Within the range there are flavors with sweet and tart tones, mellow and crisp profiles, strong aromas and vanilla or honey-like notes.
“These flavors allow manufacturers to create products with multiple apple profiles,” Sensient said.
The flavor specialist has predicted that its Honeycrips apple will be one of the most popular this year.
