Mondi outlines intelligent packaging trends

Intelligent packaging is not just about tracking products from factory floor to consumers’ cupboards, according to Mondi marketing and communication director Albert Klinkhammer.

Speaking to FoodProductionDaily.com in this exclusive podcast at the trade show FachPack 2012 in Nuremberg, Germany, Klinkhammer explains that intelligent packaging can be used for a great variety of functions.

Mondi has recently launched its Smart ID bags, which focus on using Quick Response (QR) codes on individual packs that can be scanned by smart phones to deliver data and monitor order progress.

Such technology enabled cheaper and more precise tracking of individual packs of products, versus radio frequency identification (RFID), which was more costly and could only track large batches, said Klinkhammer.

However, he said the two technologies suited different needs and it was not a case of one inevitably superseding the other.
