Feds bust JFK baggage handler for drugs in food packaging

A lost luggage handler at JFK International Airport has been arrested after authorities found narcotics hidden in empanadas, chocolate bars and other foods.

The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for the City of New York said Jorge Guerrero reportedly led a group of six people that smuggled narcotics into the country from Ecuador.

Agents intercepted one parcel at a warehouse at JFK Airport on 28 May, with 1 ½ kilograms (over 3 lbs) of cocaine stuffed inside empanadas, on 25 June a pound of cocaine was found secreted in the bottom of a container of homemade sugar and oatmeal cookies.

Approximately 500 grams (over a pound) of heroin was found inside sesame candies on 8 June.

The arrests were the result of a six-month wiretap investigation.
