Resin and adhesive development will benefit food packagers - Dow Chemical
Available in North America, the resins will provide ‘added stiffness and barrier properties’ and adhesives will ‘significantly reduce cure times’ for manufacturers, said Dow.
The MOR-FREE L Solventless laminating adhesives can provide advantaged bonding and sealing for dry goods to wet food packages and chemically resistant applications.
Single formulation of the adhesives will enable their use for multiple film structures, creating efficiencies in inventory control and easy handling, said Dow.
The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) DMDA 8810 resin is designed to provide stiffness and barrier protection for paper and flexi coating applications.
Product availability
MOR-FREE L Solventless laminating adhesives are currently being tested by several customers and the HDPE DMDA 8810 resin is commercially available, said Greg Bunker, senior group marketing manager, North America for food and specialty packaging at Dow.
Bunker told FoodProductionDaily.com: “The new MOR-FREE L solventless laminative adhesives comply with FDA regulations via a full chemical cure completed in as few as two days while also helping to improve lamination productivity and helping to reduce total systems costs.
“Traditional solventless adhesives demand a much longer cure time which can require special conditioning rooms and higher inventory levels to properly achieve the required adhesion and performance.
“The MOR FREE will provide the same excellent adhesion at a much reduced cure time versus traditional solventless adhesives.”
Dow is also introducing ELITE AT PE resins and SEALUTION peel polymers, which have been trialed and are being used commercially, he added.
Resin properties
Bunker added: “The faster curing…and the reduced chill roll contamination offered by HDPE DMDA 8810 during long runs, are advantages that customers can implement today.
“Additionally, the enhanced product formulation of HDPE DMDA 8810 can result in less edge bead, meaning lower trim waste, which can potentially help to lower costs as well.
“The HDPE DMDA 8810 resin will provide higher barrier and stiffness with excellent machinability versus other traditional “stiff” coating materials, such as MDPE materials.”
