Rich’s extends cake recall over plastic fragment fears

US-based Rich Products Corporation has extended a recall of some of its cake products over fears they may be contaminated with small fragments of plastic from the packaging.

The company initiated a recall on January 5 for its ¼ Sheet Vanilla Soaked Sponge Cake Artificially Flavored, but has extended the recall to its 8” Vanilla Flavored Pre-Soaked Sponge Cake Artificially Flavored.

Following an investigation, the problem was found to be caused by a change in the resin used by Rich’s supplier of plastic packaging. Rich’s said it was not made aware of the change.

The company’s 8” sponge cake is produced in Mexico and sold from in-store bakeries throughout the US.

To date, there have been no reports of injuries related to this product.

Rich’s said all affected products under its control had been quarantined and will be destroyed and added that it had notified customers and distributors also to remove and destroy the product.
