Acquisition round up: Bemis, Huhtamaki and D&W Fine Pack boost US portfolios

A flurry of acquisition activity has seen Bemis, Huhtamaki and D&W Fine Pack all boost their US market positions.

US-based Bemis Co announced Friday it had taken over Shield Pack, of Louisiana, in a bid to expand into high barrier packaging for bulk liquids. The firm, which has operated out of West Monroe since 1968, has annual sales of around US$25m.

No details of the deal were available.

Serving the US market, Shield makes and supplies barrier and non-barrier line packing for dry and liquid applications. Its range includes intermediate bulk containers, bulk boxes and drums, and liquid bulk containers to protect foods from moisture, oxygen, and atmospheric gases. It also provides dairy packaging; disposable liner-in-box packaging; and open-top and closed-top liners for corrugated, fibreboard, and wooden containers.

“This acquisition expands our reach into new market applications for bulk liquids and other products that require barrier packaging,” said Henry Theisen, Bemis CEO. “Shield Pack’s expertise in moisture and oxygen barrier technology complements our existing technological capabilities and our focus on high barrier packaging solutions.”

Huhtamaki expands North American ops

Finnish company Huhtamaki said last week said it had expanded its US folding carton operations after buying Ample industries for €23m (US$32).

The move follows the buyout of Paris Packaging and is part of a strategy to expand is food service operations in the US and Canada.

The Ohio-based folding carton converter has annual net sales of reaching €45m ($60m) and employs 230 workers. It will become part of Huhtamaki's North America business segment and is forecast to be accretive by next year.

"We plan to further increase our presence in the foodservice market in North America," said Clay Dunn, executive vice president North America. "In addition to the recently acquired folding carton capabilities we plan to increase our capacity in paper cups and further expand our range with pressed paperboard plates.”

Nationwide reach

D&W Fine Pack said it had completed on the acquisition of CM Packaging Group, which produces rigid plastic thermoformed containers and aluminium containers serving the restaurant, grocery, bakery, produce as well as food processor markets.

The takeover marks a step forward in D&W Fine Pack become a national packaging supplier in the US, it said.

With the CM packaging deal, the company now has revenues approaching $400m and employs 1,600 people at 11 sites in the US and Canada.
