Nicholl launches new range of compostable food trays

Nicholl Food Packaging has introduced a new range of trays made from a sugar cane byproduct that can be composted by consumers at home.

Designed to be used for a variety of food applications including fruit and vegetables, fish, poultry and meat, the Roots Biopack Sugarcane Fibre Trays are made from the pulp fibre of sugar cane dregs. This material is then hygienically treated to make it conform to food certification requirements.

Green credentials

The final trays themselves are fully compostable in line with the EN-13432 standard, which means they can be composted at home or industrially in less than 90 days.

Because of their lower carbon emissions and reduced use of water compared to regular oil-based alternatives, Nicholl claims that the products can help food manufacturers reduce their carbon footprint. To substantiate the savings, the UK-based supplier has conducted a full life cycle assessment that is available to customers.

Performance

In terms of performance, Nicholl said the comestible trays have a rigid design with a smooth finish. The trays are suitable for flow wrapping and with the optional addition of an internal coating that makes them both water and grease resistant, they can be made suitable for top sealing.

The packaging can be used in microwaves and conventional ovens up to 175oC for 30 minutes and is freezable to -40oC. Three colours are available including green, black and white, and customised shapes can be ordered in addition to the standard range.
