New GIZEH packaging combines transparency and oxygen protection

GIZEH claims to have developed new food packaging made with Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH) that combines transparency and oxygen barrier protection.

The new deep-drawn packaging is designed specifically for high quality and sensitive food products such as delicacies, sausages, and cold meats.

The packaging consists of a sheet made up of two polypropylene layers on the outside and an EVOH layer, sandwiched in between forming the oxygen barrier. It is formed in a mold with the aid of heat and pressure.

Protection and transparency

With the new packaging, GIZEH aims to offer food manufacturers a packaging option that allows them to show off their products while still providing protection from oxygen contamination.

Frank Kriener, head of the manufacturing division at GIZEH, explained the main selling point of the new product.

“Our new packaging combines two characteristics that up to now were regarded as incompatible in the deep-drawing process. An appearance that is as clear as glass and, at the same time, optimum protection of flavour and freshness using an oxygen barrier.”

Previously GIZEH said manufacturers would have had to choose between glass and non-transparent or “contact transparent” plastic containers. The latter appears transparent only below the filling line, which is the point up to which the content is filled.

Deep-draw process

Giving some insight into how the new packaging was developed, GIZEH said the company processes several special plastic layers within the scope of its inline deep-draw process.

During this procedure, extrusion of the plastic and the deep-drawing takes place in a continuous operation. In doing so, the Germany-based company said: “The molecular structure of the material is handled in an extremely careful manner.”

Kriener added: “That is an important prerequisite for achieving a highly transparent appearance.”
