A reference system that illustrates hundreds of the most common folding carton designs is now available in a digital format for the first time, said the trade association behind the project.

The European Carton Makers Association (ECMA) said its latest edition of its ECMA Code is would help companies streamline their internal and external supply chains. The application allows users to “explore and visualise the most commonly-used folding carton design styles and upload their own customised designs”, said the body.

The tool, developed for carton makers, packaging designers or product managers, has an 8-digit code system to show the structure of different packaging designs simply and clearly. The software has 250 of the most common generic designs available, which are categorised according to market segment and constructional properties.

It also provides a full explanation of the new coding system for carton design styles and provides access to other relevant industry reference standards.

Ideas pool

Users can also add their own customer-specific designs to the library and use this as a sales catalogue on their laptop when discussing packing constructions with clients. The database can also be utilised as an ideas pool by developers, who can select basic designs as a starting point and develop their own products, before adding them back to the ECMA Code to enlarge their own catalogue. All designs can be exported in a CAD-CAM-friendly format.

The codes can be browsed in a user-friendly manner and viewed in PDF, in 3D and as animated VRML files to illustrate the folding ‘sequence’, said the ECMA.

The body said its tool gives customers a broader view of designs on the market and the chance to better assess runnability on filling lines. It allow producers to optimise production and quality analysis, added the body.
