Dimensions and Features
The firm said a single crate weighed 180 grams and offered good ventilation for its contents. Van Der Windt UK claimed the product is suitable for the packaging of fruit, vegetables, food and plants and has an effective and durable locking system
The lightweight product also has potential for companies hoping to cut transportation costs.
Made from polypropylene, the assembled mini-crate expands to 106mm in height and measures 266mm long by 173mm wide. The product is just 27mm high when folded. A standard ISO pallet, measuring 800mm x 1,200mm, is said to hold 462 crates.
Richard Selby, Van Der Windt UK general manager, spoke of the mini-crate’s “potential to keep produce fresh and protected”, adding that the versatility of the product could appeal across a wide range of sectors.
Loes Van Der Toolen, export and product development director at Van Der Windt, said: “This is the first time these crates have been available in the UK but they have proved very popular during the six months they have been on sale in Europe.”
The company claimed to have sold 2.5 m pieces in the European agricultural sector.
Unique design
“A cardboard container costs less but this is outweighed by the advantages of the mini crates, namely they are more durable, long-lasting and attractive to retailers and consumers,” said Van Der Toolen.
“They are also more likely to have a ‘second life’ compared to a cardboard or plastic container,” he added.
The firm, part of International packaging group Clondalkin, also supplies a variety of coloured LDPE cover sheets to accompany individual crates for business marketing opportunities.
