Impress set to buy seafood can maker

Impress is set to acquire one of Spain’s leading manufacturers of steel cans for seafood in a move which the can maker said will broaden its coverage of the industry in Europe, as well as reinforcing its position as a leading global producer of seafood cans.

The Netherlands-based company said that the purchase of Megasa is subject to the usual conditions and is expected to complete in the first quarter of 2009.

Megasa is the third largest manufacturer of seafood cans on the Iberian Peninsula, with annual sales of approximately €40m. Based on the Atlantic coast near Vigo, the factory employs around 150 people and produces steel cans for the tuna, sardine and shellfish markets in Galicia, home to Europe’s largest seafood processing industry.

Impress said the acquisition will complement the nearby Impress factory in Pontevedra, which produces seafood cans in aluminium.
