Treofan, the Germany-based provider of labelling solutions, has launched a new line of In-Mould Labels (IML) at the Labelexpo Europe 2003.
The bonding of the plastic label with the container during the forming process not only saves a separate process for attaching the label but also saves a material separation during the recycling process, the company claims.
IMLs are becoming more important due to the growing demand for one-substance packaging. Consequently the label has been developed in order to satisfy the increasingly sophisticated requirements for IML, has extended its product range by new cast polypropylene films (CPP films) for the injection moulding application. The non-oriented PP films are being presented for the first time on the Treofan stand, at the Labelexpo Europe, currently being held in Brussels until 27 September 2003.
The multilayer PP films are manufactured by the coextrusion cast technology. The new cast films have a good performance, however their advantage is a reduced shrinkage after the injection moulding which avoids distortion or the orange peel effect. This means that large containers with a perfectly smooth surface can also be produced.
The cast films are available in transparent (CTD 82) and white (CWD 80 and 100), and their corona treatment is said to guarantee good printing properties.
Another new technology being displayed by Treofan at Labelexpo is polypropylene spot patch labels, which are said to offer a number of technical advantages which benefit product presentation. The PP labels are applied on conventional wet glue applicators so there is no need for large investments in machinery. The transparent film is suited for the growing "no label look" market. As well as transparent film, Treofan also offers a white film in high gloss for the design of high-value labels.
The Treofan group was founded in 2002 - a merger of the Dor-Moplefan-Shorko group with film manufacturer Trespaphan. The group develops, produces and markets OPP (oriented polypropylene), CPP (cast polypropylene) and BOPLA (biaxial oriented polylactic acid films) under the brand names Trespaphan, Biophan, Shorko and Moplefan. World-wide, the group employs about 2,200 staff at 11 locations with an annual production capacity of a total of 280,000 tons.
