Weighing up the options

Loma Systems, a global manufacturer of checkweighers, metal detectors and X-ray systems, is set to display its range of end-of-line inspection solutions at the Processing & Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA).

"We are confident that our products provide customers with the best deal around," said Loma product director Chris Kaine. "The latest technology and our reputation for quality combined with competitive pricing offers by far the best value for money."

The firm's new AS range of checkweighers incorporates newly developed digital loadcell. Loma believes that this makes its products the most accurate, reliable and robust system on the market.

Loma has collaborated with Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik (HBM) of Darmstadt on the development of this innovation. This has resulted in a significant improvement in weighing speed and accuracy by enabling the checkweigher to handle products at the highest line rates without degradation of performance.

Loma has developed the AS Range in a variety of options which balance the need for a tailor-made solution with ease of maintenance and cost control. For example, on display at PPMA will be AS Combo, a combined metal detector and checkweigher designed to save space and optimise performance.

In addition, Loma has developed AS 1500, which is designed for optimum performance on rigid and flexible packs up to 1500g and AS1200C, designed for dry environments where space is at a premium.

Loma's checkweigher offering is complemented by Loma OnLine, a total data management solution for companies with multiple checkweighers, which amalgamates weight and overfill data and presents it centrally. The windows-based solution can be installed on any model of Loma checkweigher, and will automatically recognise new products and set up the relevant database.

Also on stand will be Loma's latest developments in its range of IQ2 metal detectors. For example the IQ2 Metal Detector Conveyor system, which is suitable for product weights of up to 60kg, features modular mechanical and electrical components for easy maintenance and minimum downtime.

Loma's metal detectors incorporate an easy to use Performance Validation System (PVS). PVS automates the HACCP regime by automatically prompting the operator to check the performance of the metal detector at pre-set intervals and provides proof that the system is operating at optimum sensitivity throughout a product batch.

Bringing range completion to Loma's portfolio of metal detectors, the new Harsh Head Metal Detector and Dual Frequency Mounted Metal Detector will also be on stand. The company claims that the new Harsh Head Metal Detector is the most robust and durable in the market place and is designed specifically for meat, poultry and fish production environments that are subject to harsh wash down.

The Dual Frequency Mounted Metal Detector has 49 frequencies and has been developed specifically for lines running products in both metalised film and normal PE film packaging, where both a low frequency and higher frequency is required in order to maximize achievable sensitivity.

Loma's latest X-Ray technology will be on display in the compact option. The X3 Rapid offers high-speed x-ray inspection capabilities at an entry-level price and takes no more line space than a conventional metal detector conveyor. Designed to detect minute contaminants, missing items, product defects and under-filled packs, it is capable of reaching speeds in excess of 90m/min.

Loma Systems is a leading global manufacturer of temperature measurement, metal detection, checkweighing, X-Ray inspection and management information systems. Part of the specialist technology-based instrumentation and electronic controls company Spectris, Loma is an international operation with manufacturing and service bases in the UK, US, Canada and mainland Europe.
