Pack up a penguin

RPC Market Rasen and RPC Halstead have produced an innovative two-piece pack for Penguin Chukka, the new product from biscuit brand Penguin. Together with a shrink sleeve from Decorative Sleeves, the new pack is designed to give the product a bold visual identity.

Manufacturer United Biscuits required a recloseable pack that would be tamper evident, yet simple enough for the target market of young consumers to open and close.

Both RPC Market Rasen and RPC Halstead worked closely with Decorative Sleeves and United Biscuits to deliver a pack solution that would meet these requirements.

Tamper evidence is delivered via nibs on the lid that break when opened. To further extend the shelf life, the polypropylene pack has been induction heat sealed.

The high-quality printed shrink-sleeves, featuring a different image of the famous Emperor Penguin for the two varieties, are produced by Decorative Sleeves and applied at RPC Market Rasen.

The sleeves are rotogravure printed in seven colours with a heat activated adhesive. Decorative Sleeves used a low temperature, high shrink PVC film. Particular attention was paid to ensuring that the colours matched other designs in the Penguin range, printed on other substrates.

Tooling had to be achieved quickly to meet the timescales required by United Biscuits. By commissioning both pilot and production tools at the same time, RPC was able to deliver the tools for the lid and base within fourteen weeks of commissioning.

"The Penguin Chukka pack from RPC is simple but stylish," said John Leslie, packaging innovations manager at United Biscuits. "It benefits hugely from the contributions of RPC Market Rasen, RPC Halstead and Decorative Sleeves."

Penguin Chukka is a combination of mini chocolate biscuit, chocolate chip and caramel pieces, in both milk and white chocolate varieties. It is available as a single pack, or in multipacks of four.
